What to Do in These Dental Emergencies

Cracked or Chipped Teeth

It’s never good to wait to go to the dentist when you have a cracked or chipped tooth! Take the following steps, and then get yourself to the dentist quickly.

  • Rinse your mouth with warm water and apply a cold compress if there is swelling.

  • If your chipped tooth is still lodged in your gums, hold it in place with a wet warm cloth or gauze.

  • If the bleeding is severe, apply pressure to the area with a wet tea bag. This can help contract the blood vessels to minimize bleeding.

  • If your permanent tooth has fallen out, place it in a cup of warm water or milk and bring it with you to the dentist.

Toothaches

Toothaches are a symptom of a deeper issue. It can be a symptom of:

  • Gum disease

  • Tooth erosion

  • A broken tooth

  • Infection

  • Something else
